Badminton Scoring FAQ

How does badminton scoring work?

Badminton uses rally point scoring — a point is scored on every rally regardless of who served. Each game is played to 21 points, and you must win by 2 clear points. If the score reaches 20-20, play continues until one player leads by 2 points or the score reaches 30-29, at which point the next point wins the game.

How many games are in a badminton match?

A standard badminton match is best of 3 games. The first player to win 2 games wins the match. Each game is played to 21 points. In major BWF tournaments, all matches follow this format for both singles and doubles events.

How does serving work in badminton?

In singles, the server serves from the right service court when their score is even (0, 2, 4...) and from the left when their score is odd (1, 3, 5...). The serve passes to the opponent when the server loses a rally. At the start of each game and when the server's score is even, the serve is from the right side.

What happens at 20-20 in badminton?

When the score reaches 20-20, the "deuce" rule applies. A player must lead by 2 clear points to win the game. So the game continues past 21 if needed. However, there is a cap — if the score reaches 29-29, the next point wins the game (making the final score 30-29). This prevents games from going on indefinitely.

What is a rally point scoring system?

Rally point scoring means a point is awarded on every rally, regardless of which player served. This replaced the older "side-out" system where only the serving player could score. The BWF adopted rally point scoring in 2006 to make matches more exciting and predictable in length for TV broadcasts.

Can I use this for doubles badminton?

Yes. Enter team names instead of player names (e.g., "Team A" and "Team B"). The scoring rules are the same for singles and doubles in modern badminton — both use rally point scoring to 21 in a best-of-3 format.

Does this work on my phone?

Absolutely. The scorekeeper is fully responsive and designed for phone use courtside. It works offline too — no Wi-Fi needed at the sports hall. Just open it in your browser and start scoring.
