Table Tennis Scoring FAQ

How does table tennis scoring work?

Table tennis (ping pong) uses rally point scoring — a point is scored on every rally. Each game is played to 11 points, and you must win by 2 clear points. If the score reaches 10-10, play continues until one player leads by 2. A match is typically best of 5 games (first to win 3) or best of 7 games (first to win 4).

How does serve rotation work in table tennis?

Each player serves for 2 consecutive points, then the serve switches to the other player. This continues throughout the game. However, when the score reaches 10-10 (deuce), the serve alternates after every single point until someone wins by 2. The player who received first in one game serves first in the next game.

What is the difference between best of 5 and best of 7?

In best of 5, the first player to win 3 games wins the match — this is the most common format for recreational and club play. In best of 7, the first player to win 4 games wins — this format is used in international competitions and Olympic events for singles matches.

Why are games played to 11 instead of 21?

The ITTF changed the rules in 2001 from 21-point games (with 5-serve rotations) to 11-point games (with 2-serve rotations). This was done to make matches more exciting and less predictable, create more frequent lead changes, and improve the sport's appeal for television audiences. Our scorekeeper supports both 11 and 21 point formats.

What happens at 10-10 in table tennis?

When the score reaches 10-10 (deuce), two things change: first, the serve alternates every point instead of every 2 points. Second, a player must win by 2 clear points — so the game continues past 11 if needed. There is no cap, so games can theoretically go on until one player leads by 2 (e.g., 15-13).

Is ping pong the same as table tennis?

Yes, ping pong and table tennis are the same sport. "Table tennis" is the official name used by the ITTF and in competitive play, while "ping pong" is the commonly used informal name. The rules, equipment, and scoring are identical. Our scorekeeper works for both casual ping pong games and competitive table tennis matches.

Does this work on my phone?

Absolutely. The scorekeeper is fully responsive and designed for phone use at the table. It works offline too — no Wi-Fi needed. Just open it in your browser, set up your match, and start scoring.
